Eco-friendly home in the woods You’ve been picturing it, haven’t you? That stunning, sun-drenched, open-space kitchen, a chef's dream come true. Or perhaps it’s a living room renovation, transforming a run-of-the-mill space into a cozy sanctuary. Maybe, like me, you’re drawn to the idea of making your home not only more beautiful and functional, but also more sustainable and eco-friendly. The problem? You don't know where to start.

You're not alone. That was me, once upon a renovation. In fact, my own experience was so nerve-racking, filled with costly mistakes and unexpected pitfalls, that I took it upon myself to learn everything I could about the process. Fast forward to now, I've turned those hard-learned lessons into EcoHome.co, a one-stop shop to guide you smoothly through your own home renovation journey. But, let's take it from the beginning.

Lesson 1: The Folly of Inexperience

The first major home renovation I ever undertook felt like stepping onto a raft in the middle of an ocean, no land in sight. I didn’t know the first thing about construction, or about where to start. I figured finding an architect would be a good first move. Fortunately, we had a friend who was able to help us out. They designed an incredible space, particularly our kitchen. We were going from a cramped galley setup to a culinary oasis that any chef would covet. It was perfect, but perfect came with a hefty price tag.

Our architect suggested top-of-the-line finishes that turned out to be way out of our budget. The first contractor bids we got were eye-watering, to the tune of being $100k over budget. It felt like having a beautiful dream and waking up to a harsh reality.

Lesson 2: The Perils of the Lowest Bid

Undeterred, we trudged on, shopping around for contractors, and finally decided to go with the one that came in with the lowest bid. It seemed like a good idea at the time – after all, we were trying to save money, right?

Wrong. The project started off promisingly but soon spiraled into a series of setbacks and misunderstandings. The contract we had with the contractor was sketchy at best, and we didn't establish clear expectations up front. We ended up giving the impression that all we cared about was a cheap job, not a good job. That opened the door to decisions being made without our input and delays... major delays.

Lesson 3: The Nightmare of Delays

Our timeline ballooned from five months to well over a year. We found ourselves in constant disagreements with the contractor and unfortunately had to threaten legal action in order to things pushed over the finish line. I was constantly anxious about costs, unsure of what things should cost, and overwhelmed by the feeling that we were being taken advantage of. What should have been an exciting transformation had become a nightmare.

Lesson 4: Learning From Mistakes

That was when I decided to take matters into my own hands. I dedicated myself to learning everything about construction, building science, design, and renovations. I also started consulting with others who were contemplating their own renovation projects, using my own hard-learned lessons as a roadmap.

Lesson 5: Creating EcoHome.co

During this journey, I teamed up with my close friend Thad who's an expert home builder and the go-to friend for everybody who was either building a house or doing a major home construction project (that's one of the homes he built at the top of this post). Together, we created EcoHome.co, with the goal of providing a supportive platform for home renovators, especially those just starting out. We wanted people to understand what they need to focus on, what they can let slide, and how to ensure they're not being ripped off.

Our mission at EcoHome.co is to revolutionize the home renovation process. We want to help you renovate your home faster, stay on budget, and shield you from unexpected surprises. Most importantly, we want to help you make sustainable, eco-friendly choices that not only make your home more comfortable and beautiful, but also help to preserve our planet.
